🪚 Tools, Trials & Tiny Wins: Crafting with Laser & CNC on a Budget

There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning a piece of plain wood into something beautiful, isn’t there? Especially when you weren’t totally sure what you were doing in the first place.

When I first started, I didn’t have a clue what laser engraver or CNC machine to buy. I just knew I wanted to make beautiful things out of wood. So, I started with something simple — a compact laser engraver like this one that’s beginner-friendly, under $300, and didn’t completely terrify me when I turned it on.



Then came the CNC router. I now use a basic desktop model, perfect for home crafters like me who want precision without the industrial price tag. Trust me, if I can figure it out, anyone can.


🪵 My Favorite Materials & Finishing Touches


Most of my projects start with birch plywood I order on Amazon. It's affordable, reliable, and cuts beautifully with my laser. For finishing touches, I love adding subtle color with acrylic paint pens or watercolor pencils — they’re easy to control and give each piece that handmade feel.

Tip: I keep a small basket of sanding pads in different grits — they're lifesavers for cleaning up edges and giving that soft, touchable finish.


😬 Tiny Fails That Taught Me Big Lessons


Let me just say — burned edges build character. And also, you really should test your settings on scrap wood before diving into a final piece (ask me how I know).

But those tiny failures are where I learn the most. Like the time I tried to engrave a delicate floral design and ended up with something that looked like a spider got lost in a bonfire. Lesson learned: lower the power, slow the speed… and laugh it off.
